Obituary

Ms. Velma Jewell Gentry, age 81 of Portland, TN died Saturday, April 25, 2020 at TriStar ER in Portland, TN. Ms. Gentry was born June 4, 1938 in New Tazwell, TN the daughter of the late Cecil and Fronia Chadwell Whitaker. Ms. Gentry is survived by three daughters; Rhonda Collier Haynes (Terry) of Gallatin, TN, Veronica Cleveland (John) of Madison, TN and Vannessa Wallin (Linus) of Struttgart, Germany. Two sister, Linda W. Garrett of Damascus, VA and Virginia Carmen Pits (Ken) of Seymour, TN. Three grandchildren; Colt Collier (Kassie), Joshua Gentry (Alexis) and Scarlett Collier. Five great grandchildren; Dawson Gentry, Jackson Collier, Deacon Collier, Campbell Collier and Gus Collier. Along with her parents, Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harold Gentry and her son, Robert "Bobby" Gentry" Ms. Gentry was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed working puzzles, reading and spending time with her family. Her love was sewing. She sewed clothes for her children and grandchildren, she did alterations for several people throughout the years and sewed on the patches and did alterations for the Portland Police Department and some of the Sumner County Sheriff Deputies. Public graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May1, 2020 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Portland, TN. There will be no public visitation. Gilbert Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of arrangements. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life service for Ms. Gentry sometime in June at Gilbert Funeral Home.
